Can You Drink Alcohol on Mounjaro?

Professor Franklin Joseph
Professor Joseph, an expert in diabetes and obesity management, leads clinical trials, chairs the Western Cheshire Diabetes Network, and priorities person-centered care for optimal outcomes.

Alcohol consumption is associated with over 200 health conditions – it can be extremely dangerous, especially when abused. But is it even more dangerous when combined with Mounjaro?

If you’ve recently started taking Mounjaro and you’re wondering if you can enjoy a pint of lager on a Friday night, or a glass of wine with your evening meal, the good news is that yes – you can. However, there are some caveats to consider. Let’s explore the ins and outs of drinking alcohol on Mounjaro…

Introduction to Mounjaro: What is It?

Mounjaro contains the active ingredient tirzepatide – and is the first in its class dual receptor agonist of GLP-1 and GIP. It is eligible for patients with:

  • A BMI of higher than 30
  • Or a BMI of 27+ and a weight-related health condition

You take this medication once a week via injection, into your abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. For more information, check out our helpful guide on how to take Mounjaro

This medication is highly effective in aiding weight loss. In a clinical trial involving over 2500 patients with a BMI of 30 or higher (or 27 or higher with weight-related complications, excluding diabetes), 50% of patients on 10mg and 57% of patients on 15mg achieved 20% weight loss or more!

Mounjaro has full UK regulatory approval for managing weight. The length of time it takes to work can vary from person to person – it can take anything from 8 to 12 weeks to begin noticing results. Our patients at Dr Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic tend to lose up to 20% of their body weight in the first year when taking GLP-1 medications.

Potential Risks: Alcohol and Mounjaro

It’s no secret that alcohol can be dangerous, especially if not consumed in moderation. When taken with Mounjaro, there may be additional risks to consider such as increased side effects.

Increased Side Effects – Alcohol and Mounjaro share similar side effects, such as digestive issues, nausea and vomiting. Combining the two could increase these side effects.

Blood Sugar Control – Alcohol can impact blood sugar control, which can be dangerous if you’re taking Mounjaro to manage diabetes. Look out for signs of low blood sugar, such as shaking, sweatiness, hunger or dizziness – and signs of high blood sugar, such as blurred vision, feeling tired, or feeling thirsty. If you are experiencing these symptoms after drinking alcohol on Mounjaro, speak to a healthcare professional.

Dehydration – When you take Mounjaro, you are advised to stay hydrated to reduce the risk of kidney issues and headaches. Alcohol can lead to dehydration, which can increase the risk of these unpleasant side effects.

If you experience severe stomach pain, fever symptoms, yellowing of the eyes or skin, swelling of the face, tongue, throat or lips, or trouble breathing, stop taking the medication immediately and speak to a doctor as soon as possible.

Can Alcohol Stop You from Losing Weight on Mounjaro?

Alcohol can indeed prevent you from losing weight when taking Mounjaro. This is because alcohol contains a lot of ‘empty calories’ – calories that provide little to no nutritional value.

Let’s take a look at some of the most popular alcoholic drinks and how many calories they contain:

Alcohol Measure Calories
Vodka and Coke Single shot (25ml) 120 calories
Vodka and Diet Coke Single shot (25ml) 56 calories
Standard Beer Pint 208 calories
IPA Pint 292 calories
Gin and tonic Single shot (25ml) 93 calories
Gin and tonic Double shot (50ml) 154 calories
White wine Small glass 120-160 calories
Red wine Large glass 180-210 calories
Pina Colada Glass (207 ml) 380 calories

Note that calories in alcoholic drinks can vary depending on the brand.

If you drink two pints of beer in one evening, you could be consuming over 400 calories. This, combined with your daily food intake, could exceed your daily recommended calories needed to lose weight. Likewise, if you share a bottle of red wine with a friend on the weekend, you could be consuming between 300 and 400 additional calories.

Drinking alcohol can ultimately make it harder for you to lose weight. If you’re taking Mounjaro to facilitate weight loss, you could opt for a gin and slimline tonic instead – or opt for a Diet Coke instead of the higher-calorie option.

Let’s not forget that when you drink alcohol and become intoxicated, you may be more tempted by sugary or fatty food. Whether it be a greasy kebab or a chocolate bar, these extra calories can hinder your weight loss journey.

So, Can You Drink Alcohol on Mounjaro or Not?

In short, yes – you can drink alcohol when taking Mounjaro. However, you should only drink alcohol in moderation if you want to get the best results possible. Here are some helpful tips if you wish to drink alcohol whilst taking Mounjaro:
