More and more people are considering Ozempic as a treatment option for type 2 diabetes, with Google searches for Ozempic rising by over 48% in the last year, and 284% since 2022 (according to Google Trends data).
If you’re considering using Ozempic, however, it’s important that you follow the instructions provided by your healthcare professional. This can ensure your safety and help to minimise Ozempic side effects.
We’re here to help. Here is our step-by-step guide on how to take Ozempic safely:
First of all, consult with your doctor or healthcare professional to discuss the best options that suit your preferences and requirements.
Your doctor will explain what to expect from Ozempic, the potential benefits, as well as the potential risks and side effects.
Before taking the medication, make sure you learn the important facts first. Learn how it works, what it does, and how it can help with weight loss and blood sugar control.
Ozempic works by replicating the effects of the Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) hormone, which naturally occurs in your body. This hormone essentially tells your brain that you are full and slows down digestion.
Although this medication can lead to weight loss, it is not approved (officially) for weight loss alone in the UK. The guidance is clear - Ozempic is only suitable for adults with type 2 diabetes. Wegovy is the officially approved medication for weight loss that contains the same active ingredient, semaglutide.
Now it’s time to get the right supplies. When you buy Ozempic, you should be provided with:
Check you have exactly what you need, and then you can prepare for injection.
First of all, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, and then dry your hands before using the pen. Choose your injection site - you can opt for:
We recommend alternating your injection site (abdomen, thigh or upper arm) to prevent skin irritation and to ensure that the medication is absorbed efficiently. So, avoid using the same spot for each injection - even if you inject it in the same general area each time.
Begin by removing the cap from the Ozempic pen, and then attach a new needle to the pen. When using a new pen for the first time, you need to test the pen. If this is the 2nd,3rd or 4th dose from the pen you can skip this step. The test shot is performed by dialling to the priming line with 2 dots just after the -0-.
Hold the pen with the needle facing upwards and press the dose knob until the dose counter returns to -0-, lining up with the dose pointer and you will see some medication come out of the pen. If you do not, repeat the step until you have confirmed. This means that your pen is primed and ready to use.

Follow these simple instructions to inject the pen into your chosen injection site:
The injection process may take a few seconds. Once complete, remove the pen from the skin.
When you’ve finished with your dose of Ozempic, make sure you dispose of the needle safely. Place your used needle in a sharps container that will be provided by your health care provider - these containers are sealable, non-breakable and puncture-resistant. Check your local guidelines on how to dispose of the container - it may involve:
DO NOT put the used needles in with your general waste, or flush them down the toilet. This can cause harm to the environment and to waste management workers.
To ensure your Ozempic journey remains safe, be sure to schedule regular appointments with your doctor. Your doctor will monitor your progress, check your HbA1C levels to see how Ozempic is affecting your blood sugar, and possibly adjust your dose as needed.
Always let your doctor know if you begin taking any new medications whilst taking Ozempic. They can help watch out for any potential interactions, and ensure your treatment plan remains as suitable as possible.
At Dr Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic, we have Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic available for the management of Type 2 diabetes and weight loss. Our team of specialist clinicians, dieticians, coaches and nurses can offer you bespoke advice throughout your journey. During your follow-ups with your specialist nurse, they will also monitor your side effects - learn more about these side effects below.
Make sure you’re aware of the potential side effects of Ozempic, such as diarrhoea or nausea. Here are some potential side effects to expect:
These side effects can be uncomfortable, but are short-lived and will usually subside as your body adjusts to the drug.
Always follow your doctor’s dosage instructions when taking Ozempic. The starting dose for Ozempic is 0.25 mg once a week, and then after 4 weeks, your dose may be increased to 0.5 mg per week. It may then increase in another 4 weeks to a maximum of 1 mg once a week if the primary aim is glucose control and to 2.4 mg a week using Ozempic if the goal is weight loss.
If you miss your dose, ensure you take it within the next five days. If five or more days have passed, wait for the next scheduled dose.
